Question:
Getting a new domain name to do a URL redirect to a preexisting website.?

I thought this would be straight forward, however, after looking at some Domain name websites things began to get a little fuzzier as to what I am wanting and what options I need.
Setup
I have a website already up and going but it has a long and hard to remember URL.
I would like to buy a simpler and easier to remember URL and use it only to do a redirect to the preexisting website.
What features/options do you think I would need?
What places would you suggest to get the domain (GoDaddy, Domain.com Etc?)
I saw on Domain.com that I could get things like deluxe hosting (since I already have a server I did not think I would need this but wanted to make sure)
Also on Domain.com is something called DNS management, this gives you complete control over the DNS's information through the browser.
What options/features would I need to do a simple redirect?
Thank you.

I use to use Godaddy for registration but now use namesilo.com as they are cheaper and have a much better interface. They also give you free privacy which you might what to consider if you are redirecting.

How to point 2 or more domain names to one site.

Instructions

1 Add the domain names to your hosting account. Log-in to your Web host panel and add the domains. If your account does not allow multiple, or add-on, domains then you need to upgrade to one that does.

2 Obtain your name servers. After adding the domains, you should be given a list of name servers. If you do not see this information, ask your host to provide it for you.

3 Log-in to your domain control panel. Go to the website where you registered your domains, and navigate to the domain management section. Click on the domain to open the editing panel, and then add the name servers. Save the information and repeat this for the second domain.

4 Wait for the domains to propagate. After you add the name servers it can take some time for the changes to be updated across the Internet. Sometimes it happens instantly, and sometimes it takes up to 72 hours. Once the domains have propagated, you will be able to access them by typing in the URLs.

You usually want to have the domain name do 301 (permanent) redirect, this should be an option in your domain name registrar control panel.

I believe some would change the site name server setting to the new better domain name and do a redirect of the old name, a 301 redirect is supposed to pass the link juice from existing links to the new name.

I highly recommend GoDaddy as they are more user friendly, as for Redirect, I'm sure there's a PHP script for it. http://howeduvideos.com/lesson-2-get-a-domain-name/
