Question:
Are Gmail and Google Safe?!?

Lately I've been wondering about the true security of Google and Gmail. I've read some articles about how Google tracks every site you visit, and stores the information under your personal name file (or something like that). Supposedly IxQuick.com is a better search engine, as they do not store any of your information... Not sure if this is true or not, but I AM becoming more and more leery about Gmail. I've had an email account through Gmail for about 1-2 years now, and have loved it... up until I started hearing about how Google possibly stores all of your info, and then some of the new "gadgets" which Gmail has come out with. The new one, "AutoPilot" is the one which really has me concerned (several of the gadgets do, but especially this new one). It seems to confirm the suspicion that Gmail does, indeed, have the ability to read each one of my messages and gain information about me. It isn't as though there is anything that I have to hide, but I don't exactly want random people reading my personal messages.

I guess my main question here is, Does anyone know whether or not my suspicions are true? Also, Does anyone have a safer (preferably ad-free ((Which I why I loved Gmail so much--no ads!)) ) email provider which I could switch over to?

Thanks,

All e-mail providers are "unsafe", in the sense that employees of the company concerned can read your mail.

The only "safe" way to send e-mail is to encrypt it first, such that only the intended recipient of the e-mail can decode it.

And any search engine can log and monitor the searches you make and the search results you choose to visit.

I've had a Gmail account for over 5 yrs now and I love it. For one the SPAM filter actually WORKS unlike yahoo. I've had no problems with security at all. All email ISP's have their pros and cons just depends on the types of services that fit your needs. Most of the gadgets on Gmail are optional you don't necessarily have to use them.

Gmail is pretty safe, Google invests a lot in security; and assuring the user is safe; it is one of the best free web-mail providers; Yahoo and AOL Web Mail are also pretty safe. I would place trust in Google and GMail, I wouldn't worry.

Don't worry about the Autopilot, it's part of Google's elaborate April Fool's Day prank. ;)
