Problems connecting FTP from Cyberduck to my Wordpress?

***forewarning, please be direct and simple, I am a WP beginner and do not know much about computers

I am just trying to install a simple theme for my Wordpress site.

I know I need a FTP or SFTP client, so I decided to use Cyberduck. When I click "Open Connection" and put my blog URL as the sever, and my WP username and password it says "Network Error, Connection Failed. Connection Refused."

As I research this issue, I read that WP.COMs do not allow FTP access, which sounds ridiculous to me because I have seen hundreds of WP sites with modified themes. They recommend I switch to WP.ORG, but does that mean I have to change my URL? What do I need to do next to get the FTP info? How do I so to make this work? Step by step instructions please. I am so confused.

FYI: I registered/paid my domain under WP instead of GoDaddy.
I would like to stay with WP.COM bc it provides web hosting, unlimited database storage with redundancy and backups, etc. and with the .ORG you have to do all the manually and I have no idea what I am doing. I would like to find an easy way around it, and I am sure there is because everyone else uses WP.com and not their themes.

Everything is so f***ing complicated. HELP!

With wordpress.com you do not have options to change anything. You do not have ftp access. You cannot install custom themes, nor can you run ads.

With wordpress.org, you use their free installable software. This requires your own domain name, and your own hosting. Then you can do whatever you want.

Installing WordPress theme and making modification to it was so easy for me with my hosting service provider. They offered me 300+ ready made scripts even with the basic hosting package. What I got more was Unlimited space/bandwidth, unlimited database space and ability to add multiple domains. I am having very good experience with Space Hostia and I feel I made the right decision choosing these new folks on the net. Their friendly yet professional support is amazing who answers any kind of issues within 30-45 minutes(1 hr support response guarantee). Live chat is much more useful for beginners like me. I think it is really worth having a look at their plans and moving your host. Good Luck!

Ally G,

Without trying to make this look like a sales pitch, when you purchase GoDaddy WordPress Hosting, you're getting 24x7 phone or email support. Since you said you have "no idea what you're doing," this might come in handy. What we offers ranges from an Economy Plan with unlimited bandwidth and 10 databases to our Ultimate plan with unlimited bandwidth, disk space, and databases. They run roughly $5 to $10 a month. So, again, without trying to make this sound like a sales pitch, if you're in need of assistance when it comes to the setup and management of the WordPress site you're looking to run, you may want to give our Sales and Support team a call to see how they might be able to help out. As I mentioned before, they're available 24x7 via http://x.co/support.

Sincerely,

Jeremi
