Question:
Is Google Desktop removeable?
2009-06-08 15:02:46 UTC
I don't know how I got Google Desktop on my computer but now I've found I can't remove it. I have gone to Start->All Programs->Google Desktop->Uninstal. It pulls up a halfway done bar, but when I go to check to make sure it is removed, it's still there. I get the same when I try to remove it from the Add/Remove section of my computer. Anyone know how to really uninstal/ remove it?

It may have been installed sneakily by something else deliberately installed. Toolbars also creep onto PCs this way,

One method is to download the latest version, install it over the top and then remove. This works for quite a few problem uninstallations. Head to http://desktop.google.com for the current release.

Uninstalling: How to uninstall

If you've been unable to successfully uninstall Google Desktop, log in to your computer with any account that has administrative privileges. To then uninstall Google Desktop manually, edit the Windows system registry and delete the appropriate program files.

Note that editing the Windows registry is an advanced process. You may prefer to contact your system administrator. That said, you should be able to solve the problem by deleting the following registry keys:

- Hkey_Current_User\Software\Google\Google Desktop

- Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Google\Desktop\InstalledNTUserName

- Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Google\Desktop\InstalledUserSID

Next, restart your computer so this change can take effect. Then, remove the program files for Google Desktop by opening C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME(the login name with Google Desktop Installed)\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Google Desktop and deleting all the files in this directory.
