I had this problem and seemed to have fixed it in Ubuntu 9.1. I did sudo rm -rf ~/googleearth, then navigate to folder where you downloaded the installer and reinstall it with sh ./GoogleEarthLinux.bin. When it installs it may ask you where you want to save the binaries. Save them in your home/(username) directory. After installing, right click, copy the folder where you specified to save the binaries. Now do gksu nautilus, delete the old one, and rename the copy to the original. I do not know why but after I did all this it worked.
