The best way to get your site at top of Google results is to contact them and make them an offer they can not refuse. Everyone else with money does consequently their search results bare no resemblance to the words in the search bar..

Whenever I mention SEO, people always ask, what is SEO? SEO stands for "search engine optimization". Search engine optimization is the process of optimizing your landing page or website for Google's search engine. Google search engine uses an algorithm to look for a couple of different things in order to list a website in the results when a person types in a specific set of keywords. Keywords are what internet user's type in to Google's search engine when they are looking for a product or service. For example, if a user was looking for the best SEO Company in Phoenix, Arizona, they would type in "best SEO company in phoenix AZ" into the search engine and would be presented with the results that Google feels would satisfy the needs of the searcher. SEO is simply optimizing a business person's website to be the best possible result for a certain set of keywords.

How do SEO companies find the right keywords for a particular business?

They find the right keywords by using Google's keyword planner. The keyword planner allows you to type in any set of keywords or phrases and the planner will tell you how many times those keywords or phrases are typed into the search engine every month. You can type in any variation of keywords and the planner will also bring up keywords or phrases that are similar to the one's you are typing in. This is the best way to find out what kind of lingo users are using when looking for a certain type of product or service.

What does Google's algorithm look for?

The main things that Google is looking for when ranking your website are titles, keyword density, and back links. The tile of your website needs to have your keywords in them. Let's say a search engine optimization company wants to rank for the term "Best SEO Company", the title of the webpage or post that is being optimized should start out with those keywords. Like the example above, "best SEO Company in Phoenix AZ".

The next step would be implementing those keywords within the content or text of the webpage or post. The keyword density, which means, how many times that keyword is stated within the text, usually needs to be around 2-4 percent in order for Google to see that it is relevant. Don't add the keywords too few of times or too many because Google will see you as either a spammer or not relevant enough. Back links are simply links from other sites that are related to your business. For example, let's say we want to make a blog post about SEO because we are trying to build a back link to an SEO website. We would construct a blog post that has the SEO related keywords in it and we would put the link of the website that we are trying to build the back link to within text of that blog post.

Google will then read that blog post and discover that the post you created is related to the website and both of them have similar keywords in them. Now, you can just link from any website, it has to be a high quality site with at least a PR 2 or better and that's the hardest part. Not every site allows you to build links that point to other sites. Research how to build back links if you want to know more about this topic.

SEO is simply a way of connecting searchers to products or services they are looking for. If you can make your titles, keywords, and back links relevant to a user's search, you will rank highly in Google's search engine and people will be able to find you when they are looking for a particular product or service that is related to your business.

Ten Tips to the Top of Google

By Jill Whalen, Search Engine Watch, Apr 30, 2003

Having a Web site that gets found in Google isn't hard to do, but it can be difficult to know where to begin. Here are ten tips to get you started.

1. Start out slowly. If possible, begin with a new site that has never been submitted to the search engines or directories. Choose an appropriate domain name, and start out by optimizing just the home page.

2. Learn basic HTML. Many search engine optimization techniques involve editing the behind the scenes HTML code. Your high rankings can depend on knowing which codes are necessary, and which aren't.

3. Choose keywords wisely. The keywords you think might be perfect for your site may not be what people are actually searching for. To find the optimal keywords for your site, use tools such as WordTracker. Choose two or three highly targeted phrases for each page of your site. Never shoot for general keywords such as "travel" or "vacation."

4. Write at least 200 - 250 words of visible text copy based on your chosen keywords. This is a crucial component to high rankings and a successful Web site. The search engines need to "read" keyword rich copy on your pages so they can successfully classify your site. Use each keyword phrase numerous times within your copy for best results.

5. Create a killer Title tag. HTML title tags are critical because they're given a lot of weight with all of the search engines. You must put your keywords into this tag and not waste space with extra words. Do not use the Title tag to display your company name or to say "Home Page." Think of it more as a "Title Keyword Tag" and create it accordingly. Add your company name to the end of this tag, if you must use it.

6. Create Meaty Meta tags. Meta tags can be valuable, but they are not a magic bullet. Create a Meta Description tag that uses your keywords and also describes your site. The information in this tag often appears under your Title in the search engine results pages.

The Meta Keyword tag isn't quite as important as the Meta Description tag. Contrary to popular belief, what you place in the keyword tag will have very little bearing on what keywords your site is actually found under, and it's not given any consideration whatsoever by Google. Use this tag, but do not obsess over.

7. Use extra "goodies" to boost rankings. Things like headlines, image alt tags, header tags

, etc.), links from other pages, keywords in file names, and keywords in hyperlinks can cumulatively boost search engine rankings. Use any or all of these where they make sense for your site.

8. Be careful when submitting to directories such as Yahoo and the Open Directory Project (DMOZ). Having directory listings are a key component to getting your site spidered and listed by Google. Making mistakes in the submission process could cost you dearly as directory listings are difficult to change later in the game. Therefore, it's important to read Yahoo's How to Suggest Your Site and How to add a site to the Open Directory before submitting.

9. Don't expect quick results. Getting high rankings takes time; there's no getting around that fact. Once your site is added to a search engine or directory, its ranking may start out low and then slowly work its way up the ladder. Some search engines measure "click-through popularity," i.e., the more people that click on a particular site, the higher its ranking will go. Be patient and give your site time to mature.

10. Don't constantly "tweak" your site for better results. It's best not to make changes to your optimization for at least three-to-six months after submission. It often takes the engines at least that long to add your optimized pages to their databases. Submit it, and then forget about it for a while!

If you've followed these tips and still can't find your site in the engines, the first place to "tweak" would be your page copy. If you added less than 250 words of visible text on your pages, this is probably your culprit. Also, double check your keyword density, and make sure that you only targeted two or three phrases per page. Eventually, you'll see the fruits of your labor with many top ten rankings in Google and the rest of the search engines!

One really important thing that no one has mentioned yet is the AGE of your domain. if you 'start with a new site that has never been indexed' you may be making things more difficult due to the domain's age.

Where possible, try to use a domain that has been around for some time, just check to see what type of inbound links you have already.

SEO (search engine optimization) is not just a one time thing. it is an ONGOING type of work, an industry on its own, that if done properly over a long-term can yield very rewarding results.

Now, great sites provide great rankings... the most important thing aside from inbound links to your site with the anchor text you are trying to rank for....is CONTENT. Why would people link to your site if it was not full of great original content and information about your niche?

Write 300 words of Content for each keyword you are looking to promote, have it on its own page with the appropriate URL Structure

i.e. www.domain.com/directory/sub-directory/keyword-phrase.html

You MUST have different titles for EVERY SINGLE PAGE.

You MUST have different META DESCRIPTIONS for EVERY SINGLE PAGE.

Make a SITEMAP.

make an HTML sitemap, and an XML sitemap with differing priorities where the homepage is 1.0 and the other pages are ranked from 0.1-0.9 depending on the 'importance of the pages' where something like a privacy policy is 0.15 and the 'services' page is like 0.85 or something along those lines.

Sign up for Google's Webmaster Tools and then you can check to see what people are searching for to find you, as well as see any duplicate titles or meta descriptions.

Make a blog in /blog and setup plugins (blogged about this recently)

Or just hire an SEO firm to do this for you.
