Gmail has over 2.5GB of free storage. Here are some ideas how to maximize your use of Gmail. Let me know if you need an invitation to set up an account.

1. Perpetual messages storage - with fast “Google-like” search

2. Forward messages from other accounts to Gmail for archive

3. Use Gmail as a catch-all accounts

4. Gmail with POP Mail reader (Outlook, Outlook Express, Apple Mail)

5. Use Gmail with Google Desktop Search or Google Sidebar

6. Store contacts on Gmail for easy search

7. Forward selected email messages from Gmail to your mobile phone

8. Star using Gmail, in case you decided to cancel your AOL account.

9. Use Gmail as information archiver (Ideas, Quotes, Recipe, etc.)

10. Use Gmail as on-line/remote disk drive (2.5 GB)

Note: the best of both world is to use Outlook and POP features to read/store Gmail locally as well.

————————-

1. Perpetual email storage - save all your messages in Gmail. No need to delete then (unless they are useless). Since you can search your all of your Gmail messages quickly (it’s based on the Google search after all), it’s relative easy to find any messages. You can search via web, mobile phones, etc.

2. If you are using other email accounts, forward your messages your gmail to save them as archived.

3. Use gmail as a catch all and forward mail to your other account. (If you have AOL for examples, this is a good way to archive your emails on-line forever.)

4. Gmail will work with POP mail reader such as MS Outlook, Outlook Express, and Apple Mail. (Though you can only use one POP email readers.)

5. On your Windows machine. Use Gmail with Google Desktop Search and/or Google Side Bar (future tips). GDS will index your Gmail messages as well, so you can search your Gmail without being on-line. You can also use Gmail Notifier to let you know when you have new messages.

6. Store you address book/contacts on Gmail. Then you can search for it easily on-line.

7. Gmail can also forward emails to your mobile phone. You can set up ‘filter’ to have certain emails forwarded to you (e.g. high priority, or email from a specific person, etc.)

8. Replace your AOL mail with Gmail (if you cancel AOL account, AOL now allows you to keep your AOL emails, but not sure for how long.) Unfortunately AOL webmail is rather slow.

9. Use Gmail to archive information. Using Gmail “Label” and “Filter” function, you can create category (aka label) such as “notes”, create a filter with username+notes@gmail.com (username being your gmail username). Send an email to username+notes@gmail.com. Your note will automatically be ‘filed’ under ideas category (label)

10. This is a pretty cool hack. Using Gmail a remote/on-line hard drive. For Mac, use gDisk and for Windows use, GMail drive extension. Might be worth setting up a separate Gmail account for this instead of your regular Gmail. Both are freeware/donationware.

Yahoo mail is the best in my opinion. MSN doesn't offer very much storage without having to pay for it and GMail had some quirks to it when I tried to use it. Yahoo is easy and has more than enough space for the average and not so average user.
